Before you publish: a manuscript-to-release checklist

Start with the version you mean to publish
Keep a clearly named master manuscript and resolve outstanding author revisions. Sending different versions to an editor and a designer creates avoidable rework.
Separate editing from proofreading
Structural work should happen before detailed copy editing. Proofreading comes later, when the laid-out pages can be checked for the small errors introduced during production.
Decide your formats
Print and digital editions need different files. Discuss trim size, illustrations, color requirements and ebook navigation before the interior is prepared.
Gather the publishing details
Organize the exact title, subtitle, author name, description, author biography and edition information. Confirm the identifier and imprint arrangements for your selected route.
Review a proof
Check the cover, page sequence, headings, image quality and front and back matter. For print, review a physical proof where available before approving the release.
Confirm the handover details
Know which files and account access you will receive, what remains with a platform and what support is included after submission.
