Which kind of editing does your manuscript need?

Which kind of editing does your manuscript need?

Look at the whole book first

Developmental editing addresses structure, pacing and the reader’s experience. For fiction, that may mean character and plot. For non-fiction, it may mean the order of an argument or missing explanations.

Then work through the sentences

Line editing focuses on expression and flow. Copy editing checks grammar, usage and consistency. The scope may overlap, so agree on what the editor will review and how feedback will be delivered.

Proofread the finished pages

Proofreading is a final check, not a substitute for revising the manuscript. It catches remaining typos and production inconsistencies after layout.

Choose the next useful step

A manuscript assessment can help you decide what your draft needs next. Tell the editor about previous revisions and any concerns before choosing a service.
